Behavioral Health United States 2012

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) publication, Behavioral Health, United States, 2012 provides in-depth information regarding the current status of the mental health and substance abuse field. It includes behavioral health statistics at the national and State levels from 40 different data sources. The report includes three analytic chapters:

  • Behavioral Health Disorders across the Life Span
  • Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders: Impairment in Functioning
  • Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders: Treatment Landscape

The volume also includes 172 tables, which are organized into four sections:

  • Behavioral Health of the Population: the mental health status of the U.S. population and prevalence of mental illness;
  • Behavioral Health Service Utilization: providers and settings for behavioral health services; types of behavioral health services provided; and rates of utilization;
  • Behavioral Health Treatment Capacity: number of facilities providing mental health and substance abuse services; numbers of qualified specialty mental health and substance abuse providers; and
  • Payer and Payment Mechanisms: expenditures and sources of funding for behavioral health services.

This publication is the only available comprehensive source of national-level statistical information on trends in both private and public sector behavioral health services, costs, and clients. Drawing on 40 different data sources, this publication also includes State-level data, and information on behavioral health treatment for special populations such as children, military personnel, nursing home residents, and incarcerated individuals. Some of the tables in the report are:

  • Past year mental illness and substance use disorders among adults, by selected characteristics (age, sex, Hispanic origin and race, poverty status, health insurance status, geographic region, metropolitan area, current employment): percentage, United States, 2010–2011 combined
  • Death rates for suicide, by selected characteristics (age, sex, race, ethnicity): rate per 100,000, United States, 2005–2010
  • Past year mental illness and substance use disorders among adults, by sex and military service status: percentage, United States, 2010–2011 combined
  • Past month and past year alcohol consumption, binge drinking, and alcohol use disorders among adolescents and adults aged 12 to 25, by age and school enrollment: percentage, United States, 2005–2011 combined
  • Past year substance use and substance use disorders among adults, by sex and sexual orientation: percentage, United States, 2004–2005
  • Lifetime prevalence of mood and anxiety disorders among adults, by sex and sexual orientation: percentage, United States, 2004–2005 combined
  • Mental health problems among inmates in state and federal correctional facilities (2004) and in local jails (2002), by age, sex, and Hispanic origin and race: percentage, United States
  • Parent-reported emotional and behavioral difficulties in the past year among children and adolescents aged 4 to 17, by level of severity and selected characteristics (age, sex, race/ ethnicity, poverty status): number and percentage, United States, 2011
  • Autism, intellectual disability, learning disability, and other developmental delays among children and adolescents aged 0 to 17, by selected characteristics (age, sex, Hispanic origin and race, poverty status): number and percentage, United States, 2011
  • Past year substance use disorders among adolescents aged 12 to 17, by selected characteristics (age, sex, Hispanic origin and race, poverty status): number and percentage, United States, 2009–2011 combined
  • Smoking cigarettes daily in the past 30 days among adolescents in grades 8, 10, and 12, by grade and demographic characteristics: percentage, United States, selected years 1980–2012
  • Current emotional or behavioral problems among children and adolescents aged 1.5 to 17 18 months after involvement in the child welfare system, by demographic characteristics and setting: percentage, United States, 2009–2011
  • Past year mental health and substance abuse treatment among adults, by selected characteristics (age, sex, Hispanic origin and race, poverty status, health insurance status, current employment): percentage, United States, 2009–2011 combined
