The Office of National Drug Control Policy and the White House unveiled the first set of public awareness advertisements, focused on preventing young adults from misusing or abusing opioids.
The Facts: More than 17,000 people died from prescription opioid overdoses in 2016. Dependence on prescription opioids can happen after just five days. 80 percent of heroin users started with a prescription painkiller. In 2016, opioids contributed to the death of one in five young people. Every 12 minutes someone in America dies from an opioid overdose.
